The Gundam series is deceptive. When you start watching it, you expect it to be more like Star Wars. Good versus evil, the rebels destroy the Death Star, big celebration afterward. Except there's really never a celebration at the end of a Gundam show. Too many people have died by that point, and too many others have paid a terrible price.

That's not to say I found the show disappointing. The only really disappointing thing in this show is that Sayla never really played a part. I can live with Amuro not having a larger role in the show, but I was kind of hoping he and Sayla would wind up together. Oh well. At least they weren't killed off... at least not on this particular show.

Cat-Calling, “Bystander Sexism,” and How Sexual Harassment Hurts Men
The fact that street harassment tends to divide men and women as classes is no secret. Women who have experienced street harassment often report coping by responding with wariness to all strange men, in order to fend off possible future harassment. And men express frustration that they can’t approach a woman in a way they perceive as non-harassing—whether it’s to ask for directions or deliver a compliment—without being regarded as a potential offender. But the defensive strategy is often made necessary by the frequency of such harassment; Chaudoir and Quinn note that “42% of U.S. female college students [report] that they are the direct targets of cat-calls at least once a month.” And this casual sexism has serious effects on its victims: “the experience of street harassment is directly related to greater preoccupation with physical appearance and body shame, and is indirectly related to heightened fears of rape for U.S. undergraduate women.”

Obnoxious statement # 1: “Some guy harassed you/threatened you/cat-called you/insulted you/otherwise menaced you? Why didn’t you just punch him/slap him/kick him in the balls/use your martial arts to beat the hell out of him?”

The PINKENING

The pinkening! Also, pictures of cats. )

My hair will soften a little bit in the next couple of days. It needs a few more washes (and a cut, probably) until it looks its best.

OK, Flist, HALP. At about noon, my LJ & friendspage stopped loading for me. I can access other journals just fine... but not my own.

I just did a check, and everything opens quite well in Internet Explorer. But not Firefox.

There have been no recent layout changes, and yes, I cleared my cache. Hell, I even upgraded my Firefox and downloaded all updates. Still no dice.

What else can I do?

ETA: ERM, scratch that. No longer working. I can still go to individual journals and read/comment, but no dice on my own or my friendslist.

PS, my hair is now HOLOGRAPHIC magenta. Like, you can probably see me from space.

Things to do, things to do

  • Mar. 18th, 2010 at 10:45 AM
I slept long last night. I blame that on barely sleeping at all the night before. But last night, I came home, had a very small dinner, and watched the finale of Secret Diary of a Call Girl before I passed out. And stayed out, except to call J for a goodnight chat and to feed the cats. I managed to peel myself up around 10am, but I think I could have easily slept 'til noon were it not for bellydance practice.

After practice, it's hair dye time. I hate double processes, but bleach, then color it shall be. I should have gotten a haircut this week to avoid comments by hairdressers, but alas. I think I just need to get the number of Flissy's awesomesauce hairdresser and do that sometime soon.

Jason is due home tonight. Until he gets here, I have plenty of resin to pour, and I also got another ounce of 20g sterling to make filigree stuffs. Another Inara, but in silver, and some earrings.

While I wait for Flissy, here, have a meme! Meme! )

Treasury & other sundries!

  • Mar. 16th, 2010 at 7:32 PM
Purple India Treasury

Purple India Treasury, featuring one of my Bollywood Bling bracelets!

So hi, Livejournal! I have been busy and working too much and napping with my cats and not so much with the writing. But bullet points, this I can handle!

-- Yay, clocks forward. There is light in the sky when I leave work! Also, it was 68 degrees today. I wore a jacket. I walked home in the late sunshine. It was exceptionally happy-making.

-- Retail therapy! Things I have bought: Manic Panic Hot Hot Pink dye; Zoya topcoat, remove, and polishes in Adina & Reece; a sample pack of six Possets; a couple of Fantasy Bath bombs. Dyeing hair tomorrow (I forgot to pick up a shower cap today at Rite Aid), am SMITTEN with Zoya Adina, and Possets' High Tea is insta-win. Waiting for my bath fizzies with baited breath.

-- In less fun money news, I had to restock business cards, shipping boxes, bubble mailers, and grosgrain ribbon. Plus, shipping this week is already at the $90 mark.

-- J is traveling a lot this month. Woe. But this means that I'll have more time to myself. I'm gonna make up more resin pendants tonight (I have vintage pen nibs!) and work on some new filigree stuff. I'm also gonna keep working on my BOS, which has been woefully neglected lately.

-- [info]sophiaserpentia takes on privilege and centering here.

-- Made some little tweaks to my userinfo and found that I have V-gifts from Valentine's Day that I had not noticed! Fail, Christina. In any case, thank you, [info]chickenhat & anonymous.

-- Dear husband, you drank all the mango juice before you left, you sneaky bastard. Not on, man. Not on.

-- TV tonight! Lost (in all it's frustrating, er, glory?) and then Justified, featuring my latest man-crush, Mr. Timothy "Perpetually Typecast As Sherrif" Olyphant. Unf.

Found a Square shooter 2 at the salvation army for 2.50, so I bought it on a whim. It says it only accepts type 88 film, but I just wanted to make sure that no one knows of any alternatives/ways of modifying a different kind of film to fit it.

If it is worthless film-wise, any other ideas on what to do with the guy?

Samurai Jack

  • Mar. 13th, 2010 at 1:16 AM
Finished watching all episodes of Samurai Jack. The episode about the robot and the dog was a killer. We never do find out what happens to poor Lulu (sweet thing). I guess it's for the best.

I just wish the final episode hadn't had a crying baby for much of it.

-- Bought a bunch of supplies for the next mini-update (more resin pendants-- keys, bees, and vintage pen nibs).

-- I have the new copy of Belle Armoire Jewelry. Luff.

-- Bill also sent me home with extra bezels to make samples for the shop. After seeing my pendants, he ordered ICE Resin to sell. Which, ultimately, is win-win for me because I get it at wholesale price now. Woot.

-- I still have a bunch of orders to finish packing, but everything from this week will be shipped out tomorrow.

-- I want wine. Badly. Badly badly.

-- Olivebean's eyes are getting a little better. Upon her follow-up appt, the vet said that the vertical striations in one eye are gone, and greatly reduced in the other. So this round of stupid expensive medication seems to be having some effect. Her third eyelids are still up, though, and may require minor surgery.

-- I am wiped out. Seriously, the cats have been absolutely rotten about waking us up at the crack of dawn and as a result I have been CRABBY. It's mostly been Bean, who has been a total attention whore lately, but it's hard to stay mad at her when she's just "no, I just want to lick your face and snuggle you, see?"

-- Greatly, greatly looking forward to the time change this weekend, and the continuing warmth of the days as we inch towards Spring.

791: Movement Song

  • Mar. 12th, 2010 at 3:52 PM
"Movement Song"
Audre Lorde

I have studied the tight curls on the back of your neck
moving away from me
beyond anger or failure
your face in the evening schools of longing
through mornings of wish and ripen
we were always saying goodbye
in the blood in the bone over coffee
before dashing for elevators going
in opposite directions
without goodbyes.

Do not remember me as a bridge nor a roof
as the maker of legends
nor as a trap
door to that world
where black and white clericals
hang on the edge of beauty in five oclock elevators
twitching their shoulders to avoid other flesh
and now
there is someone to speak for them
moving away from me into tomorrows
morning of wish and ripen
your goodbye is a promise of lightning
in the last angels hand
unwelcome and warning
the sands have run out against us
we were rewarded by journeys
away from each other
into desire
into mornings alone
where excuse and endurance mingle
conceiving decision.
Do not remember me
as disaster
nor as the keeper of secrets
I am a fellow rider in the cattle cars
watching
you move slowly out of my bed
saying we cannot waste time
only ourselves.

790: Forever

  • Mar. 11th, 2010 at 3:47 PM
"Forever"
Jason Flatowicz

You said you'd
never fall down
the stairs again,
so I tripped you,
to remind you
there is no way
to control your
destiny as long
as I hold you
back, and that's
why I flew away,
giving you time
to escape until
it was time for
us to meet
again, and we
will meet again,
over and over.

A moment's rant: Eff you, Jamie Sale.

You know, I really like figure skating. I watch it whenever it's on and get really excited about the Olympics. And you know what? Some Canadian skaters-- current and former-- have been total assholes lately. And they all seem to be taking aim on Johnny Weir.

Warning, offensive interview ahead. )

AGH I HATE YOU SO MUCH. PLEASE TAKE YOUR FREAKING MEDAL AND SHOVE IT RIGHT UP YOUR HOMOPHOBIC, SMUG ASS.

In conclusion:
